Bioprocessing is the process of using living cells and their components to produce biopharmaceutical products such as vaccines, antibodies, and other biologics. Bioprocessing can be divided into two main stages: upstream processing and downstream processing.
Upstream processing involves the cultivation of cells and the production of the target biopharmaceutical product.
This stage includes the following steps:
Cell line development: The first step in bioprocessing is the selection of an appropriate cell line for the production of the target biopharmaceutical product.
Cell culture: Once the cell line is selected, it is cultured in a bioreactor under controlled conditions, such as temperature, pH, and nutrient supply, to promote cell growth and protein production.
Harvesting: When the cells have reached the desired growth phase, they are harvested and separated from the culture media.
Downstream processing involves the purification and processing of the harvested product to produce a final product that meets the required quality standards.
This stage includes the following steps:
Clarification: The harvested cells are subjected to a series of filtration and centrifugation steps to remove unwanted impurities and clarify the product.
Purification: The clarified product is then subjected to various chromatography and filtration techniques to separate and purify the target biopharmaceutical product from other components.
Formulation: Once the target biopharmaceutical product has been purified, it is formulated into a final product that is ready for packaging and distribution.
Bioprocessing bags are used in both upstream and downstream processing to store and transport cell cultures, media, it will used in the whole production of biopharmaceutical . These bags materials are compatible with the biological components being processed, and they are designed to minimize the risk of contamination. Overall, bioprocessing bags play a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of biopharmaceutical products.
